PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

These textiles were developed for Katie Gallagher's Autumn/winter 2013 Collection. Francis Bitonti Studio collaborated with Katie Gallagher to realize these laser wool textiles. The ambition for the project was to create an atmosphere around the body wherein the body’s silhouette would be dissolved into its surroundings.

Each textile was specifically generated for the garment. Francis Bitonti Studio digitized each of the patterns and developed computer algorithms that would generate the tool paths for laser cutting. We used the dress patterns as an input that informs the propagation of the branching pattern. The result was a dynamic responsive pattern that responds to the shape and curvature of the garment where no two parts are ever exactly alike.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The plot of land is topographically sculpted, a mix of white perennials and grasses is seeded and Five augmented reality devices are tethered to the earth. The garden is latent, waiting for erasure and addition. “Please walk in the garden” A sign reads. Movement leaves traces and paths emerge. Simultaneously the garden is added to and evolves. Visitors, using their own smart-phones or those provided (and tethered), can view and create another dimension of the garden. The interface allows visitors to choose a new species of plant, attach a secret message and then “plant” it in the garden to be viewable by successive visitors. The garden grows, receiving and containing knowledge that is hidden from plain view. This virtual space laid over the physical landscape, tied to specific place through the technology of augmented reality. This digital evolution then spills back onto the physical as real plants are added, replacing digital versions. The garden starts with contained secrets, then writes them for others and finally translates them into material. The garden starts as subdued canvas and explodes with color.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
OpenHouse is a temporary installation, designed and constructed for Des-Cours; an exhibition of art and architecture sponsored by the AIA. Each year, during the DesCours event, 15 private, and otherwise hidden, spaces within New Orleans are transformed into public spaces that test the boundaries of architecture. OpenHouse intervened in 2009 by re-articulating the canopy of a 500 square foot courtyard located within the French Quarter. As visitors fill the courtyard the canopy adjusts in response to their social interactions. Below the canopy, a number of seating elements are distributed throughout the courtyard. Each seat is equipped with a sensing device that is networked to the canopy through a micro-controller. The micro-controller analyzes the patterns of use within the courtyard, by counting the occupancy of seats, and returns a programmed reaction through the canopy. If no seats are taken within a given section of the courtyard the canopy acknowledges vacancy by raising its height and providing an open, inviting, spatial condition at that location. If a small number of users occupy a portion of the courtyard the canopy assumes intimacy and lowers itself to protect the promiscuous whis- pers between two lovers. If many users occupy an area the canopy becomes erratic; raising and lowering spastically as if to emulate the excitement of the group below.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION:
Each element on the ceiling is controlled by a central computer composed of a series of microprocessors. Every chair in the space has a sensor embedded in the seat. The seating sends back simple binary on/off information to the central computer.

This basic binary data is processed into a mechanical response from the ceiling. Each component on the ceiling is composed to two servo motors and eight LED lights, the body of the robotic unit is build with PETG plastic.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This pavilion is intended to operate within a public plaza; the pavilion is intended to function as refuge within the public landscape. Through the accumulation of many small elements the environment is built up as a fog. The structure uses density rather than surface to define space. It is first in a series of explorations examining the intersection of structure and noise. The geometry was generated using an algorithm that generates a branching structure with weighted probabilities depending on specific locations in space.

<description>Procedurally generated forms have been an ongoing research project for Francis Bitonti Studio since it was founded in 2007. For most projects we develop our own proprietary design tools. We are constantly exploring the generation of new geometric formations through the use of various computer programming environments.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Francis Bitonti Studio developed this Interior for the Peconic Ballet Theater in Riverhead, New York. This 2000sqft facility features reception area changing rooms and a 1000sqft performance and rehearsal space with a sprung floor system. White walls hover between the floor and ceiling, pulling you across, around and in. The reception area sets the space in motion as you enter. A long shelf element pierces through the wall, unfolding and bifurcating becoming the front desk. The solid black finish absorbs the shadows, creating a phantasmal floating three-dimensional object. The lighting is situated to create diffuse space, one without shadows, time or solid ground, leaving us with only the dancers to provide us with a sense of time and place.
